United Kingdom Extends Methanol Poisoning Warning Roster with Eleven Destinations
British authorities has placed eleven more countries to its official alert list regarding the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
This revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Just a few weeks ago, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, following several high-profile events including the fatal death of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that as little as minimal doses of industrial alcohol can lead to vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hrs.
What is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?
Methanol is a toxic chemical often employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not intended for ingestion.
While it is generated during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the refining procedure.
However in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to notice.
