2026 Declared the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. Yet, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat evident elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the wave in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Honestly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Many of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
